Dark Shadows

Starting the Dark Shadows Forum

"My name is Victoria Winters... my journey is just beginning..."

On 27 June 1966, those words began the journey of a young governess to the remote coastal town of Collinsport, Maine, which for the next five years would be the home of the assorted supernatural forces inhabiting the world of ABC-TV's Dark Shadows, the first gothic soap opera.

Nine months into the show's run, grave-robbing drifter Willie Loomis (John Karlen) released vampire Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid) from imprisonment in the Collins family mausoleum, and pop-culture history was born

In the coming years, the residents of Collinsport would be victims to werewolves, witches, and warlocks, even the Devil himself. Amongst the most popular supernatural characters were Ang?lique (Lara Parker), a beautiful vengeful witch who gave the vampire curse to Barnabas, and Quentin Collins (David Selby) a Byronic teen idol afflicted with the werewolf curse.

1966 to 1971

Since the switch over to dtv has left me with little to no tv at all, I dug out my tapes of DS.  It's been so long, it's almost like seeing it for the first time.  Right now I'm watching them in the Parallel Time period of the show.

Unfortunately, one of the largest Cable providers, Comcast, has recently moved just about everything they have to their digital package.  This is a gimmick IMO to force people to upgrade to digital.  I'm glad I got satellite a while back.

Several weekends ago we had Boomerang, DIY, Style Network and a couple of others on Direct TV.  We thought, "WOW they added more to our tier".  Sadly it must have just been a free weekend and we no longer have them.  :(

As for DS, I've only got two or three sets and they aren't in order so I can't watch them.  For some reason nobody really wanted to get them for me as gifts.  Guess I'll have to buy them for myself.

I went ahead and kinda revived this a little bit

I found the 1991 revival series (what they call it and what it says on DVDs)

I bought the entire 1991 series at wal mart for about 10-12 dollars and one of the original series called the vampire curse, it starts with some of the episode from the originals series but goes into more detail of how Barnabas became a vampire, same price about 10-12 dollars  8arty

I will have to look for those Markus.  We've been sort of miffed w/Wal-Mart lately.. cutting back on stock, doing away w/fabric dept, taking out the self-checkout counters, etc.

I'm anti-Walmart too, but I'll venture in for DS!  Markus, what section of their movies did you find the DS?  Or was it on their website?

I ventured onto their website the other week to get another digital converter box, as no one carries them in the stores here anymore!  Walmart, Sears, CVS and radio shack stopped selling them!  Probably to get people to buy new tv's instead!

Our Wal-Mart has a tv section for show dvd's unless they are new and then they are with the new releases.  I didn't know they'd stopped selling the converter boxes.  Will have to tell hubby b/c we were thinking of getting one for my Mom in case her cable goes out.

This is the first time I'm happy about shopping in Walmart for a long time!  Probably not since the changes they started making after old Sam died.

Good luck with the converter box!  If you find them elsewhere, let me know.  I'm thinking of getting one for a backup or for the camper tv.

I've been getting the DVD's of Dark Shadows off of Amazon.  I've found that the "used" ones work fine and are very reasonably priced.

Keep in mind that the converter boxes will only work with over the air high def/digital tv.  They will not pick up any cable tv signals.

The tv in our basement isn't digital or high def and the converter box works on it.  My understanding was that the converter boxes were for the people who do not have digital tv's b/c they did away with analog transmissions.   When our satellite has gone out we use it upstairs so we can still get our local channels.

Melody if I see any I will let you know.
