Spider-Man 4 casting rumors
« on: March 15, 2010, 06:37:33 PM »
Sony has opted to "reboot" the Spider-Man movie franchise, after the director of the first three films announced he would not be able to complete Spider-Man 4 by 2011 as originally promised.  Sam Rami has departed as director, and along with him Toby MaGuire and Kirsten Duntz have resigned from the film.

Sony is now doing a complete reboot, putting Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson back in High School.  Reportedly, known Disney actors and actresses are in line to play the lead roles.

Zac Efron is set take over the role of Peter Parker in the next Spider Man feature, a well-placed source at Universal Pictures blabbed to Britain’s Daily Star on Sunday.

The High School Musical sweetheart will replace Tobey Maguire, 34, in the fourth blockbuster movie, due to start shooting later this year and scheduled to hit cinemas in 2012, according to the new report.

Universal stunned film fans late last year when the studio announced that it was firing the cast of the megabucks franchise and working on a script that would send Spidey back to high school. Producers of the Spider-Man franchise believe 22-year-old Zac –who has a huge teen following thanks to work with Disney— will bring a new, younger fanbase to the Spider-Man series.

According to the report, producers are also said to be considering reuniting Zac with his High School Musical co-star — and real-life girlfriend — Vanessa Hudgens in Spidey 4. The 21-year-old brunette is tipped to replace Kirsten Dunst as Mary-Jane Watson.

Rumors are also that if Hudgens isn't hired to play Mary Jane "Wizards of Waverly Place" actress Selina Gomez might be signed.

Reportedly the characters of Norman Osborn (Green Goblin) and Dr. Curt Connors (The Lizard) are in the script--but not as their villainous counterparts, just their civilian identities.  Nicholas Cage is being sought to play Osborn and former Dr. Who actor David Tennant is being discussed to play Connors.  If this happens, then apparently Cage would play the Green Goblin in a sequel and Tennant the Lizard later on as well.

That's what they are saying now.  If it happens then they're looking for the younger crowd for the film.

They ended up hiring 26 year old actor Andrew Garfield to play the role.  Garfield is American born but grew up in the UK and has acted in various UK films.  He's also appeared in a couple of Dr. Who episodes.
